Power of Social Media

A client of 1Eighty Design (who happens to be my brother and sister-in-law Jack and Angie Hamstra) recently went to India to finalize the adoption of their 4th child.

When they first decided to adopt Angie wanted a way to document the process.  We setup a WordPress Blog and Facebook Page for her to write about everything the family was going through — the emotions, the highs, the lows and everything in-between.  Just about a year ago Angie wrote her first entry telling about the family and their desire to adopt another child.  Now exactly 100 posts later the adoption is complete and they’re back in Indiana settling in!

They left for India on October 30 and returned on November 11. It was amazing to see the amount of traffic their non-commercial blog and Facebook page received.  Here are some of the stats, the number of people who were reached shows the power of social media.

Number of Visitors

While they were gone they had 822 unique visitors to their site with over 4500 page views.  That’s not too bad for a site that isn’t paying for advertising and relying on word of mouth. Imagine one of the biggest moments of your life and knowing you have almost 1000 people following along waiting to see what happens!

Visitor Locations

They were receiving hits from all over the world from the US, Australia, European nations and more!

Facebook Reach

You can see the number of people reached on Facebook grew as the trip was in progress.  Their posts on Facebook were reaching thousands of people virally though their fans sharing and liking.  The number of fans almost doubled before the trip started so people could follow along with them.

The following picture was the first family photo (besides their daughter who couldn’t travel) and was seen by more than 1700 people!
